About Our Gutter Guard Installation Service

Tired of climbing ladders or paying for eavestrough cleaning twice a year? Gutter guards keep leaves, debris, and pests out of your gutters while letting water flow freely. They don't eliminate maintenance entirely, but they dramatically reduce it.

We exclusively install Kaycan Performance ProGuard II™ — a rigid anodized aluminum guard that handles GTA weather, including freeze-thaw cycles and heavy rainstorms. The high-flow louver profile minimizes overflow even during downpours.

Gutter guards aren't right for every home. If you have minimal trees and don't mind seasonal cleaning, guards might not be worth the investment. But if you're dealing with constant clogs, have lots of trees, or simply want to reduce maintenance, they're a smart choice.

Are Gutter Guards Worth It?

Do the math: if you're paying $400–$600 per year for cleaning and your guards cost $2,500, they pay for themselves in 4–6 years. Add in the peace of mind of preventing ice dams and water damage, and most homeowners find them worthwhile.

Gutter Guards Explained: Do They Work and Are They Worth It?

An honest look at how gutter guards work, the different types on the market, what to expect in an Ontario winter, and how to tell whether your home will benefit.

How Gutter Guards Work

A gutter guard is a cover that sits over the top of your eavestrough. Water flows over or through it and into the trough, while leaves, needles, seeds and twigs are kept out and blown or washed off the roof edge. The goal is simple: keep the eavestrough and downpipes flowing freely with far less cleaning.

The difference between guards comes down to how they separate water from debris — and how well they're built to stand up to snow loads, ice and years of UV exposure.

Water follows the guard surface and drops through the screen into the trough, while leaves and needles stay on top to dry and blow away.

Types of Gutter Guards Compared

There are dozens of products on the market, but most fall into a few broad categories. Each has strengths and trade-offs.

  • Foam and brush inserts: inexpensive and easy to install, but they trap fine debris, can grow moss and usually need replacing within a few years.
  • Plastic screens: low cost, but they can become brittle in cold weather and warp or sag under snow.
  • Fine mesh: excellent at blocking small debris, but very fine mesh can clog with pollen and grit and may need periodic brushing.
  • Rigid aluminum louvered guards: strong, durable and designed to shed debris while channelling water into the trough. Well suited to freeze-thaw climates.

Why We Install Kaycan ProGuard II

We install Kaycan Performance ProGuard II, a rigid anodized aluminum guard with a high-flow louver profile. It's built to handle the conditions GTA homes actually face — heavy summer downpours, fall leaf drop and winter snow and ice — without sagging, cracking or blowing loose.

Because it's made of aluminum rather than plastic or foam, it doesn't become brittle in the cold or break down in the sun, and it's backed by a 20-year manufacturer warranty plus our 3-year service warranty.

Gutter Guards in an Ontario Winter

A common question is whether gutter guards cause ice problems. The honest answer is that no gutter guard prevents ice dams — those form on the roof because of heat loss from the attic and freeze-thaw cycles. What a good guard does is keep the trough free of leaves heading into winter, so meltwater has a clear path to the downpipes instead of freezing in a clogged gutter.

A rigid aluminum guard also supports snow loads without collapsing into the trough. If your home has a history of ice dams, guards can be combined with heat cables for added protection.

Is Your Home a Good Candidate?

Gutter guards deliver the most value on homes that collect a lot of debris or are difficult to clean safely. If you're scheduling multiple cleanings a year, guards will often pay for themselves over time in reduced maintenance.

  • Trees overhanging or close to the roof, especially maple, oak, willow or pine
  • Two-storey or steep roofs that are risky to clean from a ladder
  • Recurring overflow or clogged downpipes
  • Pests or birds nesting in the eavestroughs
  • Homeowners who want to reduce ladder work and maintenance

Do Gutter Guards Eliminate Maintenance?

No guard is truly maintenance-free, and you should be wary of anyone who claims otherwise. Fine debris like pollen, shingle granules and roof grit can still settle in the trough over time, and debris can occasionally sit on top of the guard after a heavy leaf drop. The difference is that maintenance becomes occasional rather than constant.

We always clean and flush the eavestroughs before installing guards, and we check that the gutters are properly sloped and securely hung. Installing guards on a sagging or poorly pitched system only hides the underlying problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about gutter guard installation services.

QWhat do gutter guards do?

Gutter guards are designed to prevent debris from entering eavestroughs while still allowing rainwater to be collected. They block leaves, twigs, and other debris while letting water flow into your gutters freely.

QDo gutter guards eliminate the need for cleaning?

No, gutter guards themselves may require maintenance and cleaning in addition to the eavestroughs they protect. However, they dramatically reduce cleaning frequency. The ease of cleaning can vary depending on the type of screen installed.

QAre gutter guards right for every home?

Not all homes will benefit from the same gutter guard solution. We help homeowners choose between options such as gutter foam or specific leaf screens, providing clear explanations of the pros and cons to facilitate an informed decision.

QHow do gutter guards handle heavy rain?

Effective gutter guards must be able to handle storm flow without causing water to overflow the eavestroughs. Our ProGuard II features a high-flow louver profile that minimizes overflow even during heavy downpours.

QDo gutter guards prevent ice dams?

No gutter guard can prevent ice dams on its own, because ice dams form on the roof due to attic heat loss and freeze-thaw cycles. Guards help by keeping eavestroughs clear of leaves so meltwater can drain, and they can be paired with heat cables on homes prone to ice dams.

QCan gutter guards be installed on my existing eavestroughs?

In most cases, yes, as long as the eavestroughs are in good condition, securely fastened and properly sloped. We clean and inspect the system first and will let you know if any repairs are needed before the guards go on.

QWill I still need to clean my gutters with guards installed?

Much less often. Guards keep out the bulk of leaves and needles, but fine debris can still accumulate over time. Most homeowners find an occasional check and flush is all that's needed.
