About Our Soffit Repair Service

Soffits — the panels under your roof overhang — serve critical functions: they ventilate your attic, keep pests out, and protect rafters from moisture. When soffits are damaged, your whole roof system suffers.

Common soffit problems include holes from pest entry (squirrels, raccoons, birds), rot from trapped moisture, sagging from failed hangers, and blocked ventilation from paint or debris.

Soffit repair is often more cost-effective than replacement when damage is localized. We assess the extent of damage and recommend the most economical solution.

Check Your Attic Too

Soffit damage often allows pests into your attic. If you've had holes in your soffits, have your attic inspected for animal damage, droppings, and contaminated insulation.

Soffit Repair: Restoring Ventilation and Keeping Pests Out

What your soffit actually does, the problems that call for repair, how pests get in through the eaves and how to know when replacement makes more sense.

What Your Soffit Does

The soffit is the material on the underside of your roof overhang, between the wall and the fascia. It closes in the eaves so animals and weather can't get into the roof structure, and on most homes it also provides the air intake for attic ventilation. Perforated soffit panels let fresh air flow into the attic, where it rises and exits through roof or ridge vents.

When soffit is damaged or blocked, that ventilation path is disrupted — and when it's open or loose, it becomes an entry point for wildlife.

How soffit ventilation works
Warm, moist air out at ridgeFresh air in at soffitInsulation (baffles keep the channel open)
Cool outside air enters through the vented soffit, travels up past the insulation baffles and exits near the ridge, carrying away heat and moisture. Blocked or damaged soffit breaks this cycle.

Common Soffit Problems

Most soffit damage is caused by water, animals or age. These are the issues we see most often on GTA homes.

  • Loose, sagging or missing panels after wind storms
  • Holes chewed by squirrels, raccoons or birds
  • Water stains, peeling paint or rot on wood soffit
  • Damage from overflowing or leaking eavestroughs
  • Panels blocked by paint or insulation, restricting airflow
  • Gaps where soffit meets the wall or fascia

Pests and the Roofline

Raccoons and squirrels are common in Toronto and the surrounding area, and the soffit is one of their favourite ways into an attic. A loose panel or small gap is often all it takes. Once inside, animals can damage insulation, wiring and vents.

If wildlife is currently living in your attic, it's important to have them humanely removed by a licensed wildlife control company before the soffit is sealed. Once the animals are out, we repair the damage and secure the eaves so they can't get back in.

Why Soffit Damage Often Starts With the Gutters

When eavestroughs overflow or leak, water runs behind the gutter and soaks the fascia and the soffit beneath it. Repairing the soffit without fixing the source of the water means the damage will come back. During a repair, we check the eavestroughs and fascia above to make sure the underlying cause is addressed.

Repair or Replace?

Isolated damage — a few loose or broken panels, a hole from an animal, or a small section affected by a gutter leak — can usually be repaired. If the soffit is old wood with widespread rot, it's mostly solid with little ventilation, or damage appears around much of the house, replacement with vented aluminum soffit is usually the better long-term investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about soffit repair services.

QWhat is soffit and why is it important?

Soffit is the material forming a ceiling from the top of an exterior house wall to the outer edge of the roof. Its primary functions include ventilation (soffit vents help draw heat and moisture away from the attic), protection from weather elements, and aesthetic appeal by providing a polished, finished appearance to the roofline.

QWhat are the signs of soffit damage?

Key indicators include holes and sagging which can become entry points for pests, clogs or leaks in gutters causing peeling and staining, ceiling discoloration (yellow or brown stains indicating moisture entry), clogged soffit vents obstructing airflow, and visible damage in the soffit cavity when checking from the attic.

QWhy is soffit ventilation important?

Soffit vents help draw heat and moisture away from the attic, which is crucial for maintaining a healthy attic environment. Proper ventilation prevents ice dams in winter and mitigates damage from excessive summer heat. Clogged vents can lead to significant problems with your roof system.

QShould I repair or replace my soffits?

If damage is localized (one or two areas), repair is usually more economical. If damage is widespread, soffits are very old, or you want to upgrade from wood to maintenance-free aluminum, replacement is the better investment. Professional inspection can help determine the best approach.

QCan you match my existing soffit colour?

In most cases we can closely match common aluminum and vinyl soffit colours. Older or faded materials may differ slightly from new panels, which we'll discuss with you before starting.

QShould I remove animals before soffit repair?

Yes. If animals are living in the attic, they should be humanely removed by a licensed wildlife control professional first. Sealing the soffit with animals inside can trap them and cause more damage.

QWhy does my soffit have stains or rot?

Stains and rot usually point to water coming from above — most often overflowing or leaking eavestroughs, or a roof-edge leak. We look for the source so the problem doesn't return after the repair.
